Finding inspiration, I find, is generally the hardest to achieve when we focus on it - just like trying to remember a dream - it suddenly becomes elusive and just out of reach. As we all know - most of our best ideas come when we least expect them and often from very unusual sources - true creativity can’t be nailed in place (thankfully!) and that’s the fun and excitement of the whole process. Try explaining that to a child confronted with a piece of homework. It is hard enough for adults to grasp it but explaining to a child to just let the ideas flow does make them look up sharply. So imagine my delight when I asked my two sons to write a letter to each other outlining what they liked about each other (yes this was a punishment for picking on each other non-stop). The letters were full of descriptions, lists of reasons why they liked their sibbling, games they enjoyed playing together, experiences they had shared. It brought tears to everyones eyes and made us all realise how valuable our relationships are yet how lightly we sometimes take them. The spelling and grammar might have been a bit dodgy, but the sentiment was wonderful!

I shared this Zen aphorism with the kids the other day. We were discussing sitting back on ones laurels, not putting too much effort in, being content to just drift - I should mention here that I have a teenager, and despite having been told for years (13 to be precise) that the teenage years are tough - for all concerned - they have indeed taken us somewhat aback. It is mainly this laid-back, so-what, moody attitude. The seeming lack of ambition, drive or energy. So we are currently on a campaign to go beyond the summit and we need all the motivational assistance we can get. I have found that my instinct for becoming my son’s friend works best - I have learnt to keep quiet (mostly) when his attitude stuns me. And I have found that it is for me, not him, to aim higher than the highest peak - from there I will be able to reach down and pull him up. Not an easy thing to do but then all worth while challenges have their moments!

I have been heartened by the number of nudges I have received recently, pointing out that I am lagging woefully behind with this blog. Heartened because it shows that they were missed and somebody is reading them!! Since last writing the world of oils has gone into a spin - along with the rest of the world, that dreadful term ‘credit crunch’ has tainted the glorious world of essential oils. Half Term Blues

The holidays are back! Fantastic! Suddenly the house is turned into warm and wonderful chaos - uniforms are thrown into the washing machine with more determination than usual, skates are left out by the backdoor and all holiday homework is firmly parked in the ’school basket’ to be ignored until the last minute! But this time I stupidly agreed to let my two younger ones go to Holiday Club - it does sound fancy but actually it is a bit of a parking space for busy working parents and what is on offer could easily be replicated at home - for film and popcorn read DVD and microwaved popcorn, for playstation tournament read - well what happens at home - anyway I paid up and walked them through the bright sunny morning to the Holiday Club - read Nissan Hut - and now I feel bereft - certainly I am working but I know they are probably looking around thinking - hmmm - Holiday Club indeed - I did try to explain to them that the description belied what was really on offer - it is all about managing expectations - I hate to think they are disappointed - yet another one of those harsh childhood lessons - extra marshmallows on frothy hot chocolate when they return and I have decided we should all go out to dinner (actually they are probably having a lovely time and it is just me suffering!!)

Kick starting the day

Breakfast is one of those funny meals in our house that can either run into lunch when we are on holiday and too busy to stop playing in our PJs - or has to be slightly forced down because we are late for school and certainly must have something warm and nutricious to see us out the door. Personally I can’t quite decide whether eating before my run is a good or bad thing so often I skip breakfast first thing and run feeling starved! One of the issues of course is finding something that is nutricious and yet does not taste like sawdust. I do love porridge but we all agree it is not an every-morning thing. We take it in turns to make fresh pancakes and that is great but again the need for variety creeps in - then we discovered Lovedean Larder. Now I have ‘knitted’ my own muesli in the past - added my own toasted sunflower seeds, handfuls of raisins and whatever else I could find that fitted the ‘healthy’ bill, but the difference here is that Lucy O’Donnell’s clever recipes are carefully designed to blend texture, flavour and nutrition into something that frankly is almost too good for mere breakfast - so we are now into healthy snacking with it too!!

Sweet smell of creativity

Whilst wearing my ‘other’ hat and taking part in a brainstorming session with 7 very creative people last week – it struck me how little importance we place on our sense of smell when creating a ‘business-like’ atmosphere. The fact that the Japanese pump lemon oil through the air conditioning units of some top banks (to invigorate their employees) has not quite – well – wafted over here yet. As I have talked about before, I have a lovely friend who is a life-coach and she uses Focus to great use – but here we all sat – straining our brains to wring out creative thought-pieces, and I had one of those cartoon-style voice bubbles and thought – time to hit the oils and design a blend that encourages, engenders, envelopes us with creativity – well you can see what I mean…. I need some myself obviously! This leads me straight onto to how the current education system is designed to draw all creativity out of the kids and replace it with a sound education… but that might have to be another blog!!

Something in the air

I don’t know whether it is some sort of strange planetary alignment but these last few days I have had an unprecendeted number of orders for What If? and a couple of phone calls from mothers who have over-anxious children - at this rate I will need to start some sort of poll to establish whether September is the month for feeling anxious. True back to school is a big key factor, but it is those other, less tangible What Ifs? that seem to be asailing us. What If the sky falls on my head of course has been going on since Asterix first came to cartoon life and it is worth taking a little time to analyse why we all, big and small, have moments where we doubt, we feel anxious, tomorrow seems like the great unknown. If any of you would like to share your What Ifs - here is your chance - it is always therapeutic to get these things off your chest but it also helps us put things into perspective. Often these feelings represent changes, be they physical, emotional, in the past or in the future and it is best not to berate ourselves but to have a few introspective moments to reassure our inner self - and of course a good dose of What If always helps to support us through those more wobbly moments!

On the boosting trail

We have been through our first week at school and already we have heard dread stories of lice, tummy bugs and the odd cough and sneeze - surely not yet, aren’t their immune systems full of Summer enzymes? Well for those who had to put up with this year’s British Summer it is possible that the immune systems are well below zero - so I think this is a good time to roll out some boosting material. Bee pollen is wonderful and easy to disguise in smoothies. Blackberries are so abundant this year, we are lucky enough to have hedges of them wherever we walk or cycle and they are packed with antioxidants. Fresh mint tea with delicious manuka honey, plenty of that last minute late summer sunshine and of course lashings of essential oils!! At night lavender dotted about to relax and keep bugs at bay, in the bath a few drops of chamomille blended in a little sweet almond oil to gently unwind (we love Stars diluted in almond oil but that might be extravagant!). It has to be Snuffles to take on a hanky to school. I sprinkle a little on collars too - so far we have avoided nits and the likes but I can’t say for sure that the peppermint got in their eyes and put them off…!

Back to School

Back to school - surely not that time of the year already! And of course this is the right time to start rolling out all those wonderful oils - this morning was the first day back for two of my three and ‘What If’ was the chosen blend - no hesitation there!!
